The waiting-room list: turn dead time into done time

2 min read
On hold with customer service. Waiting for the microwave. Sitting in the dentist's lobby. Life is full of weird little pockets of dead time — too short for real work, too long to enjoy. Here's the trick: keep a "waiting-room list" — a short note on your phone of tiny tasks that take under two minutes each. Reply to that text. Check your bank balance. Add the appointment to your calendar. Clear three old emails. Cancel one subscription you never use. Update the grocery list. Look up the one thing you've been meaning to Google. The rule is simple: whenever you land in dead time, open the list and knock out exactly one item. Just one. It works because these tasks never need motivation. They're so small that starting is the whole battle — and boredom does the starting for you. Left for "later," they expand into a background hum of guilt; paired with time you were going to waste anyway, they practically vanish. Build the list tonight: dump every nagging two-minute thing from your head into a note. Cap it at a dozen or so — when you clear one, add another from the mental pile. Think of it as restocking. A month of waiting rooms won't change your life. But your inbox will be lighter, your errands shorter, and that quiet "I should really get to that" voice will be noticeably quieter. All from time you were going to waste anyway.
