U.S. and Israel Are Preparing for a Possible Attack on Iran After the Midterms
I woke up this morning to a story I think everyone should be paying attention to, because it could reshape the Middle East and hit household budgets worldwide.
NPR and the New York Times are both reporting that the U.S. and Israel are preparing plans for a possible attack on Iran in early November, right after the U.S. midterm elections on November 3. A person briefed on the war planning told NPR the U.S. is amassing forces in the region. The Times reports the buildup — three aircraft carriers, thousands of Marines, fighter jets, and Special Operations forces — should be fully in place by early November, with targets reportedly including Iran's nuclear facilities, energy infrastructure, and missile and drone arsenal.
Two important caveats. First: President Trump has not approved any attack. He objected when Israel initially wanted to strike in mid-October, ahead of Israel's October 27 election, and these preparations may partly be a pressure campaign to push Iran toward a diplomatic deal. Second: Iran says it is ready for both. Its foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, said Tehran is "just as prepared for diplomacy as we are for war," while Iranian state media quoted a security source warning Iran would retaliate against U.S. interests in the region if attacked.
What to watch next: Israel votes on October 27, the U.S. midterms are November 3, and right after that, the window these plans describe begins to open. If it escalates, oil and gas prices will feel it fast.
