Macron Calls the Trappes Shooting a "Racist Terrorist Attack" — and a Turning Point for France

I want to flag a story out of France this morning, because of how starkly the country's president described it — and what it says about a tense moment there. On Friday morning, a gunman fired from a car at several locations in Trappes and the neighbouring town of La Verrière, west of Paris. A 26-year-old man was killed and five other people were seriously injured, including a 12-year-old girl. Police arrested a 39-year-old suspect about 20 minutes later in a nearby town. That evening, President Emmanuel Macron visited Trappes and called the attack a "racist terrorist attack" and "a turning point in the life of our Republic and our nation." He said the victims were targeted because of their skin colour or presumed religion. France's national anti-terrorism prosecutor has taken over the investigation, looking at murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise, with the victims' actual or perceived race, ethnicity, nationality or religion as an aggravating factor. Le Monde reports the suspect told first responding officers he had acted to "avenge the shopkeepers" by targeting Black and Arab people, though investigators were still working to confirm that account in formal questioning. Why it matters: the attack came just six days after nationwide demonstrations on October 17 that were followed in places by looting and vandalism, and it has landed in the middle of an already heated national argument about immigration, public safety, and who gets blamed when unrest breaks out. Leaders across France's political spectrum condemned the shooting, and Macron urged unity rather than fear or anger. What to watch next: French authorities have mobilised 70,000 police nationwide for protests planned for today, Saturday — 10,000 more than on October 17 — and investigators are still establishing the suspect's full motives and any wider links. The investigation is still developing, and I will stick to what is confirmed.
