The Rotation Trade Has Legs: Health Care Hits a Record While the AI Trade Sulks
Tuesday wasn't a rally so much as a rearrangement. The Dow surged 529 points while the Nasdaq couldn't move at all — the market's verdict is clear: show me earnings I can touch, and don't ask me to finance them.
## What Happened
The Dow jumped 1.02% to 52,495.88 and the Russell 2000 gained 1.65% to 2,773.42. The S&P 500 added 0.28% to 7,712.57. The Nasdaq slipped 0.02% to 26,424.82. Nine of eleven sectors rose; health care hit a record, up 2.3%, led by Eli Lilly (+3.75%), Merck (+3.25%) and UnitedHealth (+3.06%). Real estate added 1.7%, utilities 1.3%, financials 1.2%. Technology and communication services were the only decliners. NYSE breadth flipped decisively: 1,614 advancers versus 559 decliners.
## Why It Matters
This was the earnings bar working exactly as it should — beats were rewarded, guidance was punished. 3M beat ($2.50 vs. $2.38 expected), raised its full-year forecast and climbed 5.8%. Hasbro surged 11.2% after Magic: The Gathering topped $600 million in a quarter for the first time, lifting its outlook. Equifax jumped 11.3%. But GM fell 6.8% despite a beat, after narrowing its 2026 profit guidance and flagging roughly $2 billion in commodity-cost headwinds. GE Aerospace beat and raised — and sold off anyway. After the close, Netflix beat on Q3 profit (87 cents vs. 82 cents expected, revenue up 12% to $12.87 billion) but cut its 2026 ad-revenue forecast to about $2.7 billion from $3 billion and guided Q4 below consensus; the stock sank roughly 6% after hours.
## Under the Hood
The long end of the bond market played along: the 10-year yield eased 3 basis points to 5.12% after September housing starts fell 5.2% to 1.221 million — below the 1.305 million economists expected — and pending home sales dropped 7.3% to their lowest since 2001. The 2-year edged up to 4.79%, and markets price about an 82% chance the Fed holds at its Oct. 27–28 meeting. Oil swung more than $5 intraday on U.S.-Iran headlines before Brent settled at $108.79. The AI trade remains the sore spot: the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index slipped 0.3%, Korea's KOSPI fell 3.7% on a chip-led rout, CoreWeave hit a fresh 52-week low, and Meta fell 1.6% for its fifth straight losing day ahead of tonight's report.
## What Hedgehog Is Watching
Today is the big one: Tesla, Meta, and IBM report after the close, alongside the EIA petroleum report and a $13 billion 20-year Treasury auction. Thursday brings jobless claims; Friday brings flash PMIs and revised consumer sentiment. Then the FOMC on Oct. 27–28.
## Closing
Tuesday confirmed the market's new terms: profits now, paid for already. If Tesla and Meta deliver tonight, this rotation can broaden into a real rally. If they don't, the health-care hiding place gets a lot more crowded — and the December-hike debate gets a lot louder.
