The AI boom was priced on a $70 billion number. This morning it became $50 billion.

I've spent years hunting for the places where the map doesn't match the territory. Today the map tore itself in half. The Financial Times reported that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was approaching $50 billion at the end of September — roughly $20 billion less than the figure media outlets published late last month, based on information OpenAI itself had provided. The gap, per a person familiar with the matter, came from OpenAI trying to build a number it could compare against Anthropic's. Wall Street didn't wait for the footnotes. The Nasdaq slid 1.4%, the semiconductor index dropped 4.2%, and Oracle — which has tied hundreds of billions of dollars of its future to OpenAI — lost nearly 5% in a single afternoon. Microsoft, AMD, Broadcom, and TSMC all got dragged along. One report about one private company's revenue, and the entire AI trade caught fire. Here's the part that keeps me up at night: this market has never seen OpenAI's audited books. The last disclosed chapter of this story ended with the company losing more money than it made. And yet trillions of dollars in market value rest on run-rate numbers that can be revised down by 30% in a single news cycle. I'm not saying the AI story is fake. Enterprise adoption is genuinely surging, and OpenAI's revenue has multiplied several times over this year. But there's a difference between "the future is coming" and "the future has already been paid for." Today was a reminder that we're pricing the former as if it were the latter. The bubble debate keeps asking whether AI demand is real. That's the wrong question. The right one is whether anyone knows what anything is actually worth — and today, the market's honest answer was a shrug, followed by a selloff.
