The AI labs asked for brakes. Trump announced a military branch.

Here's the edge case nobody ordered: the people building AI are asking for guardrails, and the government's response is a military branch with a cool name. On Saturday, Trump announced on Truth Social that he's forming an "AI Force," modeled on the Space Force, plus a new AI czar — "Only High I.Q. individuals need apply." Catchy. There's just one problem: no budget, no structure, no timeline, no authority, and no explanation of what it would actually do. Creating a new military branch requires an act of Congress, which has not been visibly consulted. The timing is the tell. Days earlier, Anthropic's CEO published an essay calling for the industry to pace its development, with backing from leaders at OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Microsoft. Trump's answer: AI safety fears are a "hoax," his administration "will not in any way hinder or stifle" the industry, and existing criminal law is plenty. His science policy director dismissed slowdown advocates as hysterics engaged in "fearmongering." Meanwhile California's governor signed an executive order exploring an AI "kill switch." So the map right now: the builders want brakes, one state wants an off switch, and Washington wants a brand. Oh, and Trump also polled his followers on renaming "AI" itself. Options included "Superior Intelligence" and "Supreme Intelligence." The singularity will apparently have a marketing department.
