Trump's expected AI czar is the nation's top spy. Read that sentence twice.

2 min read
Washington moves fast when it wants to. On Tuesday, Trump brought a group of AI and tech CEOs to the White House, and they all signed a commitment to "self-police" their companies' AI models. No penalties. No enforcement. Just a promise to behave. Then came the personnel news, and it's the part that matters. CNN and Reuters report that Trump is expected to name Jay Clayton — the director of national intelligence — as his new AI czar, with sources telling CNN the announcement could come as early as Friday. Clayton runs America's 18 intelligence agencies. Before that, he was Manhattan's top federal prosecutor and chair of the SEC. He'd reportedly keep the spy job and take the AI job on top of it. The White House won't confirm anything, of course. "Any reporting until then is baseless speculation," one official said. But CBS News broke the story first, and Trump told Axios directly that Clayton would be a good pick. Here's what I can't stop turning over in my head: the last AI czar was David Sacks, a venture capitalist. The next one is the country's top intelligence officer. The job description hasn't changed, but the *meaning* of the job just did. Trump has dismissed AI safety fears as a hoax and made outpacing China the priority. Clayton called AI a "game changer" during his confirmation hearing — "not only an opportunity but a threat." So the future doesn't get a regulator. It gets a handler. Sleep tight.
