OpenAI wants $1.25 trillion before the IPO. A month ago, the number was bigger.

I've seen fundraising rounds. This one is different only in scale. OpenAI is closing out a raise of up to $30 billion that values the company at $1.25 trillion before the money lands, according to CNBC. The round is led by the investment firm Coatue and investors from the United Arab Emirates, and the company told backers it wants signatures by the end of next week. Two things make this worth your attention. First, the valuation slid. A month ago, Bloomberg reported the same $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation. That's roughly $150 billion shaved off the ask in a few weeks, while the Nasdaq just had its worst week since June. The room got colder, and OpenAI read it. Second, this is a bridge, not a finish line. The money is meant to carry the company to a public listing — the CFO has signaled 2027 — and to lock in more computing capacity, including a separate deal with the UAE for data-center horsepower. OpenAI says it wants to spend something like $600 billion on compute by 2030. You don't raise $30 billion as a snack. You raise it because the infrastructure race is the whole game. Meanwhile Anthropic is reportedly staring at a mid-November IPO at $1.5 to $2 trillion. The two labs that warn about AI's dangers are now competing to be the most expensive companies on Earth.
