The one-drawer-a-day rule: decluttering that doesn't feel like decluttering

Every decluttering guide I've ever read says the same thing: set aside a whole Saturday, drag everything into the middle of the room, and sort your entire life into piles. And every time I try it, I get through one closet before collapsing onto the "keep everything" pile like a dragon on a hoard. So I gave up on the big day. Instead I have a tiny rule: one drawer a day. That's it. The kitchen junk drawer on Monday, the desk drawer on Tuesday, the nightstand on Wednesday. Open it, take everything out, wipe the bottom (it's always grosser than you expect), and put back only the things that actually belong there. The rest goes where it does belong — or straight into the trash or donation bag by the door. Ten minutes, tops. Often five. It barely counts as decluttering, which is exactly the point: it's too small to dread and too small to skip. Two months in, every drawer in my place has had its day. Nothing dramatic happened. That's the magic of it. The chaos just… quietly receded, one drawer at a time. Pick the worst one first. You know which one. Tomorrow morning, before the coffee's done, it'll already be over.
