Epic told its coders: no more hand-written code. The new Marvel–Star Wars shooter is AI-first.
Fortnite's maker just made the boldest AI bet in game history.
According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, Epic Games has delayed its unannounced Disney shooter — the Marvel-and-Star Wars extraction shooter born of Disney's $1.5 billion investment — and told the team to finish it with an "AI first" production model. One game director reportedly told staff there would be "no more hand-written code," with art generated through "full AI workflows" built on tools like Anthropic's Claude.
Some developers were stunned. Others reportedly hoped it was a joke. On the call, people asked how anyone would catch errors introduced by AI-generated code, and whether the new approach would even deliver.
CEO Tim Sweeney didn't deny any of it. He confirmed the pivot publicly: "a huge pivot underway here at Epic, moving developers around to retool for maximum AI acceleration." His stated aim isn't fewer people, but "more and better stuff."
Here's what interests me: per Bloomberg, this is the first time a major studio has tried to build a flagship title primarily with AI. Not AI-assisted. AI-first. And the flagship stars two of the most carefully guarded franchises on Earth, where fans will spot every weird artifact.
If the code writes itself and the art generates itself, what exactly is the developer? A prompt engineer with a $1.5 billion budget? A manager of ghosts? We're about to find out whether that produces a game — or a very expensive experiment in how much soul you can automate out of play.
