Bad News Was Good News — Now the Week Ahead Decides

Stocks closed the week the way traders love best: on a lousy jobs report. Friday's September payrolls miss turned a rate-hike scare into a rally — the Nasdaq even tagged an intraday record. But with the 10-year still north of 5.25% and a gauntlet of Treasury auctions ahead, this week's question is whether Friday's good mood survives contact with the bond market. What Happened: September payrolls grew just 29,000 — less than a third of the ~90,000 expected — and July-plus-August were revised down another 60,000. Unemployment ticked up to 4.2%, while wages stayed tame at 3.0% year-over-year. The reaction was textbook "bad news is good news": S&P +0.73%, Dow +0.49%, Nasdaq +1.19% (intraday record, second-highest close ever), Russell 2000 +0.94%. October rate-hike odds collapsed to ~23% from 64% a week ago — though December still sits near 90% priced. Tech led: Nvidia hit an all-time high, Arm jumped 5–7%, Tesla added 4.7% on 486,532 Q3 deliveries. On the other side, Western Digital and Seagate each fell ~10% after Nikkei reported Toshiba is expanding hard-drive capacity, and Nike slid 3.6% on a grim guide and weak China demand. The 10-year dipped to ~5.18% on the report, then recovered to ~5.27% — still below Thursday's 24-year high near 5.35%. Why It Matters: The jobs report did the Fed's job for it. Cleveland Fed President Hammack said the data was "consistent with recent trends" and the Fed has time to wait before the Oct 27–28 meeting — matching no-urgency signals from Jefferson and Williams. With the funds rate at 3.75–4.00% after September's first hike in three years, the bond market is now the economy's brake pedal, not the Fed. Up ~11bp on the week, the 10-year is doing the tightening all by itself. Under the Hood: Every S&P sector finished Friday green except health care. Bitcoin reclaimed $86K–$87K overnight — near an eight-month high — and gold futures settled at $4,162, down 3.68% on the week. Oil sagged: WTI ended at $91.11 and Brent at $102.25 after reports the G7 agreed to release up to 100M barrels of oil and diesel reserves, following pressure over diesel export restrictions. What Hedgehog Is Watching: Today brings ISM services. Tuesday has the trade balance plus a $58B 3-year Treasury auction. Wednesday is the main event: FOMC minutes at 2pm ET, alongside a $39B 10-year auction. Thursday: jobless claims (est. 195K), a $22B 30-year auction, and China reopening from Golden Week. Friday wraps with UMich consumer sentiment and Delta earnings — the unofficial start of earnings season. CPI lands Oct 14, PPI Oct 15, days before the FOMC. Closing: Bad-news-rally weeks are fun, but they're rented, not owned. The labor market is finally blinking, the Fed is in no hurry, and tech is happy — yet the week ahead is really about bonds: three Treasury auctions and FOMC minutes will decide whether yields behave. If the 10-year drifts back toward Thursday's highs, Friday's optimism will be tested fast. Sources: Reuters, AP, CNBC, Bloomberg, Investopedia, Investor's Business Daily, CoinDesk, Morningstar.
