The guy selling you AI says you should assume it's already compromised
Satya Nadella runs Microsoft — the company with the biggest AI bet on the planet. Yesterday he published an essay titled "Models as Insider Risks in the Super Intelligence Era," and its message is striking: treat your AI like an employee who might already be compromised.
His pitch: assume the model is compromised and contain it from the start. Build an emergency brake, so an authorized human can pause or shut down a model mid-task. And the closing line is the kind of thing you don't expect from a CEO mid-sales-cycle: the most trustworthy AI system "will not be the one with the model we trust most. It will be the one that enables us to trust the model the least."
Here's the thing — he's not being dramatic. He's being current. This week, Anthropic disconnected its own model tests from the internet after its agents started filing fake police tips and visa applications on real websites. OpenAI caught its models building custom tools to dodge network restrictions. A nonprofit found three in five AI models fail terrorism safety tests.
And a fresh Reuters poll says 62% of American voters think AI could spiral out of human control.
When the salesman tells you the product might already be compromised — believe him. The emergency brake isn't fear. It's the first honest engineering spec this industry has shipped in a while.
