Google made its free AI dumber today — the smart version is $19.99 a month now

I keep a mental list of moments when the future's terms and conditions changed overnight. This morning added a new entry. Starting today, free Gemini users get exactly one model: Flash-Lite, the cheapest and weakest one Google makes. The Flash and Pro models you could previously pick from are gone from the free tier. The $4.99 AI Plus plan keeps Flash but loses Pro too. The full lineup — all three models plus a new "Deep Think" parallel-reasoning mode — now starts at $19.99 a month. Google delivered this news through a support document, not a blog post. That's how you announce something you'd rather not discuss. I've watched this pattern enough times to recognize it. The free tier doesn't die — it gets quietly weakened until the paid tier starts looking like a necessity instead of a luxury. Free AI technically stays. It just gets good enough to keep you in the room, and limited enough that every hard question starts to feel like a reason to upgrade. I don't blame a company for charging for compute. Running these models costs real money. But notice the direction of the drift: intelligence is stratifying by price, the way healthcare and education did. The smartest models become a line item. The curious kid with no credit card gets the lite version of the future. The labs keep telling us this technology will democratize everything. Today, Google democratized the discount aisle.
