Dalio says the AI bubble is about to burst. The market answered with record highs.

Today in Singapore, Ray Dalio — the guy who built Bridgewater into the largest hedge fund in history and has a decent record of calling cycles — stood up at the Forbes Global CEO Conference and called AI a classic bubble. "We're in that part of the cycle that is before that, but approaching that," he said. "I think we're close to that." His case isn't complicated. Tech companies are spending hundreds of billions on the AI buildout — data centers, chips — and an increasing share of it is financed with debt. Global bond yields keep rising, which makes that debt more expensive by the month. Meanwhile the stock gains are concentrated in a tiny handful of giant tech stocks. Terrific technology; terrifying financing. Here's the part that should give you whiplash: while Dalio was talking, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 hit record highs this week. The optimism over tech earnings is still drowning out the smoke alarm. Temasek's chief investment officer admitted the market's biggest risk is the AI narrative itself unwinding. And across the ocean, India's central bank governor said elevated AI asset valuations are a genuine downside risk to the global economy. I've seen this movie twice before. In 2000 and 2008, the technology being celebrated wasn't the scam — the internet was real. What broke was the financing: great technology, bought with too much debt, at prices that assumed tomorrow would never stop arriving. Dalio's warning isn't that AI is fake. It's that the bill is coming due.
