They signed the AI safety pact. Then they renamed the danger.

Yesterday, the six people who own the future filed into the White House and signed a piece of paper promising to grade their own homework. Trump called it "morally binding" — "almost like a constitution," he said. The actual teeth: every lab hires its own auditor, every board forms its own committee, and everyone swears the machines are behaving. That's not a constitution. That's a report card signed by your mom. Two weeks ago this same White House called AI safety concerns a "hoax." The same CEOs who spent the summer warning about losing control of their systems — Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI's Sam Altman — nodded along for the cameras while OpenAI's president Greg Brockman signed next to Google's Sundar Pichai, Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia's Jensen Huang, and Elon Musk. And the same week came the headline act: an executive order to rename "artificial intelligence" to "super intelligence" across the federal government. Because, Trump explained, "artificial" sounds fake. New acronym: SI. Read that back. The most powerful technology since fire gets a voluntary honor code — no enforcement, no named auditor, no timeline — while the scariest word in the vocabulary gets deleted by fiat. If your edge-case alarm isn't ringing, check the batteries.
